The artwork at Kilima Franschhoek celebrates the rich heritage of the Western Cape, blending grand landscape paintings with exquisite sculptures that capture the region’s natural splendor.
Among the featured artists is Jan Ernst Abraham Volschenk (1853–1936), a self-taught painter from Riversdale, Western Cape.
Initially a bookkeeper at a law firm, Volschenk painted in his spare time, joining the South African Drawing Club in 1894 to exhibit his work. In 1899, he married Helen Smalberger, and they raised nine daughters, with their eldest, Vera, becoming a landscape artist like her father. In 1904, at age 51, Volschenk left his job to focus on painting full-time, creating majestic oil paintings of the Langeberg Mountains and Riversdale’s vibrant veld, filled with pink Cape heath and bright aloes.
His works, known for their meticulous detail and warm, romantic hues, are a highlight at Kilima. Complementing these paintings, Kilima Franschhoek showcases beautiful sculptures . Together, these artworks create an immersive experience, inviting guests to connect with the Western Cape’s soul.

Children aged 12 years and younger (maximum two children per room) will be accommodated free of charge on a Bed Only basis if sharing with one or two adults, but will be charged for breakfast. Children occupying their own rooms will be charged the full adult rate. Children aged 0-2, no charge. Children aged 3-12, 50% of the applicable rate per meal per day for breakfast.
