The Kusasa Project

Embarking on a journey of compassion and courage in the Franschhoek Valley…

Kindness, love and above all courage, drew at all the heartstrings when The Schutte Legacy Family Forum visited The Kusasa Early Childhood Development Academy in the Franschhoek Valley this week.

Sareta Schutte(Group CEO Murchison Holdings), BenaDea Lubbe and Nardine Smit (Schutte Family Forum members) and Alicia Giliomee (General Manager of Kilima Franschhoek) met Marie Louise Raymond, Principal of The Kusasa Project, and spent the morning here to learn more about how we can extend a hand of service.

Although it was a very cold morning, the winter chill was no match for the warm welcome that we received from Marie Louise and her talented team. It is clear that here, there are no limits to the unquestionable dedication and love of these educators, as we bore witnessed to their can-do individual attention to a group of over 150 young learners.

We learned more about their holistic approach to early childhood development and their commitment to solving all challenges big or small. It comes down to Ubuntu and in a valley like Franschhoek, nothing could be more apparent. So, creating support, awareness and inclusion for this noble cause is crucial.

As the morning drew to a close, we moved from class to class, handing out lucky packets(caringly packed by the Kilima Franschhoek team). We shared some very tender moments with these learners, and then we came at a standstill in the playground…

There, growing in a sandpit was one Borage plant. You might just pass this little plant by, but look closely and you will note the exquisite blue star-shaped flowers. Legend has it that in the Celtic traditions, Borage was brewed to a tea and given to the warriors to drink for “courage” before setting off to battle/on important treks. “Borage… Courage”

Quite fitting then how the Schutte Family Forum credo comes together with The Kusasa Project and joins forces with one word – an important one: COURAGE.

After all, courage comes in all sizes and its light sets the skies ablaze when you least expect it.

Change can only happen if we have the courage to set foot on the journey.
